How a Mini-Split System Works
A mini-split system, also known as a ductless system, offers both cooling and heating, as well as flexibility for controlling the temperature in different areas of your home. Here’s a basic rundown of how it works:
Two Main Components:
- Outdoor Unit: This part of the system is installed outside your home. It contains the compressor, which pumps refrigerant through the system.
- Indoor Unit: This unit is mounted inside the room you want to heat or cool. It blows warm or cool air into the room.
Refrigerant Cycle:
- The outdoor unit pumps refrigerant through the system.
- When you want to cool a room, the refrigerant absorbs heat from inside your home and releases it outside.
- When you want to heat a room, the process is reversed: the refrigerant absorbs heat from outside (even when it’s cold) and brings it inside.
No Ductwork Needed:
- Unlike traditional HVAC systems, mini-splits don’t need ductwork. This makes them easier to install and can be more efficient because there’s no energy loss through ducts.
